Porsche Engine Repair in Abu Dhabi:From Misfires to Full Rebuilds
A Porsche engine gives clear warnings before it fails: a check engine light, a cold-start rattle, rising oil consumption or a coolant smell. Exotic Auto Services diagnoses these faults on every Porsche engine family, from the M96 flat-six in the 996 to the twin-turbo V6 and V8 in the current Cayenne, Macan and Panamera.
Diagnostics, leaks, timing chains, IMS bearings and full rebuilds.
Our technicians read fault data from the engine control unit, then confirm the cause with compression, leak-down and borescope tests before quoting any repair. That way you pay for the fault that is actually there, whether it is a cracked coolant pipe, a worn timing chain, bore scoring or a failing IMS bearing. You get an itemised quotation before work begins, and every engine repair carries our workshop warranty.
The 8 most common signs of a Porsche engine fault are a check engine light, misfires, oil leaks, overheating, unusual noises, smoke, high oil consumption and power loss. The table below links each sign to its likely cause.

The IMS Bearing in the 996, 986, 997 and 987
The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing is the best-known Porsche engine weak point. Porsche used a dual-row bearing until 1999, a smaller single-row bearing from 2000 to 2005, and a larger single-row bearing from 2006 to 2008. The single-row bearing from 2000 to 2005 has an estimated failure rate of about 8%, against less than 1% for the dual-row version, according to the Oregon Porsche Club of America.
A failed IMS bearing can destroy the engine in seconds. Porsche removed the intermediate shaft entirely from 2009 with the 9A1 engine. For earlier cars, we inspect the oil filter for metal debris and can replace the bearing with an upgraded unit during clutch or rear main seal work.

Bore Scoring on Flat-Six and V8 Engines
Bore scoring is wear that cuts vertical grooves into the cylinder walls. It mainly affects the 3.4L, 3.6L and 3.8L M96 and M97 flat-six engines and the 4.5L and 4.8L M48 V8 in the Cayenne and Panamera. Early signs include oil consumption above 1 litre per 1,500 km, blue smoke on cold starts, and a ticking noise from one cylinder bank. We confirm it with a borescope inspection before quoting any repair.
1 L per 1,500 km = warning sign
Coolant Pipe Failures on the Cayenne and Panamera V8
The M48 V8 uses plastic coolant pipes in the valley between the cylinder banks. Repeated heat cycles make them brittle, and a crack can drain the coolant within minutes. We replace them with aluminium pipes, which is a permanent fix.
Aluminium replacement = permanent fix
04 Three paths
Repair, Rebuild or Replace: Which Does Your Engine Need?
The right repair depends on what the diagnostic finds, not on the symptom alone. The table below compares the three options.
01
Targeted repair
When it fits
A single failed part such as a seal, coil, pipe or sensor
What it involves
Replace the part and test the engine
Typical turnaround
Same day to 3 days
02
Engine rebuild
When it fits
Internal wear such as bore scoring, bearing wear or timing damage
What it involves
Strip, measure, machine and reassemble with new internal parts
Typical turnaround
2 to 4 weeks, depending on parts
03
Engine replacement
When it fits
A cracked block or damage that makes a rebuild cost more than a replacement
What it involves
Fit a new, remanufactured or used engine and code it to the car
Typical turnaround
1 to 3 weeks, depending on supply
We give you the cost of each option in writing, so you choose with the full picture. Turnaround depends on parts availability, and Porsche-specific parts often ship from Germany.

☀ Desert conditions
Why Abu Dhabi Conditions Are Hard on Porsche Engines
Abu Dhabi heat puts extra strain on engine cooling, oil and rubber parts. The National Centre of Meteorology recorded 50.0°C at Al Shawamekh in Abu Dhabi on 1 August 2026.
50.0°CAl Shawamekh · 1 Aug 2026 · NCM
Oil breaks down faster
High temperatures and stop-start traffic thin engine oil sooner, so we recommend a Porsche oil change in Abu Dhabi every 10,000 km rather than the factory 15,000 km.
Plastic cooling parts age early
Coolant pipes, expansion tanks and thermostat housings become brittle after repeated heat cycles.
Seals harden
Rubber seals and gaskets crack sooner, leading to oil and coolant leaks.
Short trips cause carbon buildup
Engines that rarely reach full temperature build carbon on the intake valves of direct-injection engines.
Fuel quality matters
Porsche recommends 98 RON fuel for most models. Super 98 is sold at every UAE fuel station, and using a lower grade can cause knock on turbo engines.
07 Owner habits
How to Protect Your Porsche Engine
The 5 habits that extend Porsche engine life are regular oil changes, correct oil, early leak repairs, a gentle warm-up and annual cooling checks.

01 10,000 km / 12 months
Change the oil every 10,000 km or 12 months
Using Porsche A40 or C40 approved fully synthetic oil.
02 Every 2 weeks
Check the oil level every 2 weeks
Because Porsche flat-six engines can use some oil between services.
03 At the first drop
Fix small leaks early
Before they reach the clutch, belts or exhaust.
04 Every cold start
Warm the engine gently
And avoid high revs until the oil reaches operating temperature.
05 Every year, before summer
Inspect the cooling system every year
Before summer, including pipes, pump and coolant level.
Buying a used Porsche? Our Porsche pre-purchase inspection in Abu Dhabi includes a borescope check of the cylinders and a review of engine over-rev records, the two checks that catch the costliest engine problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Describe the noise, light or smell on WhatsApp and a technician will tell you what the diagnosis involves.
How much does Porsche engine repair cost in Abu Dhabi?
The cost depends on the fault, the model and the parts chosen. A sensor or coil replacement costs far less than a timing chain job or a full rebuild. Exotic Auto Services gives an itemised quotation after diagnosis, with up to 35% off on repairs compared with the dealership.
02
How long does a Porsche engine rebuild take?
A Porsche engine rebuild usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. The time depends on machining work and parts supply, as some Porsche parts ship from Germany. Smaller repairs such as seals, coils or coolant pipes are often finished within 1 to 3 days.
03
What is the IMS bearing, and does my Porsche have one?
The IMS bearing supports the intermediate shaft that drives the camshafts on M96 and M97 flat-six engines. It is fitted to the 911 (996 and 997.1) and the Boxster and Cayman built from 1997 to 2008. Porsche removed it from 2009 onwards, so later cars do not have this risk.
04
Is it worth rebuilding a Porsche engine instead of replacing it?
A rebuild is usually worth it when the block and heads are sound and the wear is internal. It keeps the original matching-numbers engine, which matters for resale value on the 911. Replacement makes more sense when the block is cracked or the rebuild quote exceeds the cost of a replacement engine.
05
Why is my Porsche burning oil?
Porsche engines can use some oil, but more than 1 litre per 1,500 km points to a problem. Common causes include worn piston rings, bore scoring, a failed air oil separator and worn valve stem seals. A compression test and a borescope check find the cause.
06
Can I drive my Porsche with the check engine light on?
You can drive carefully to a workshop if the light is steady and the car runs normally. A flashing light means an active misfire, so stop driving to protect the engine and the catalytic converter, and call the workshop on +971 58 609 5249 before moving the car.
07
Do you use genuine Porsche engine parts?
Yes. OEM-equivalent parts are fitted as standard and genuine Porsche parts are available on request. Your quotation lists the parts and prices. Critical parts such as bearings, timing components and head gaskets always meet Porsche specifications.
08
Does engine repair at Exotic Auto Services affect my Porsche warranty?
No. The UAE Ministry of Economy abolished compulsory dealer servicing in 2016, so repairs at a certified workshop do not void your factory warranty on their own. Keep the invoices and follow the factory service schedule.
